WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 3 2025
from 4.00 to 5.00 PM
Time zone: Europe/London
As multilingual learners progress beyond compulsory schooling in Scotland, the role of English language assessment becomes increasingly critical. With diverse pathways spanning Scottish Qualifications (e.g., Higher, Advanced Higher, SCQF), international qualifications (IB), vocational awards and tertiary entry, navigating how best to assess learner language ability and progress is extremely complex. Institutions require clear, equitable assessment strategies, which will allow them to appropriately support the learners in their context.
This session explores how schools, colleges and universities across Scotland can adopt CEFR-aligned tools to support fair, data-driven decisions. Drawing on case studies from Scottish IB schools (evidencing EAL exam access arrangements), further education colleges (diagnosing low-proficiency entrants for FE and vocational routes) and universities (via inclusive access for displaced or refugee learners), we will highlight best practice and emerging challenges.
Participants will leave with insight into how robust assessment supports inclusion, progression and transparency of access across the post-16 Scottish education sector.
